Mon 21 FebChristchurch – Twizel (B,L,D) 54 km

We depart Christchurch early at 8.00am by minibus, take a short break in the attractive township of Geraldine, and arrive at our destination at Lake Tekapo, site of the much photographed lakeside chapel and dog sculpture, by late morning.
We begin our cycling beside the canal and follow the trail past spectacular views towards Mt Cook. Down the hill and past Tekapo B Power station we cycle along Haymans Road, stopping for a picnic lunch. Then it’s off along the trail which follows the shore line of Lake Pukaki.
Crossing the road at the Salmon shop we enter a charming area of expansive Mackenzie Country complete with tussock and views to the Alps. Finally we cycle into the country town of Twizel and have a well-earned rest.
Dinner at Poppies Restaurant, Twizel.

Then we travel back to Twizel, have an independent lunch and this afternoon cycle to Lake Ohau Lodge. We follow the road out of Twizel and then cycle canal roads for the first 18 km to Lake Ohau. A gravel cycle trail takes us around the beauty of the lake foreshore, with the last 10 km back on the road to the very comfortable Lake Ohau Lodge.
You may like to use the hot tubs to soak the muscles and relax at the bar before tasting the lodges high country dining.

Wed 23 FebLake Ohau – Omarama (B,L) 44 km

After breakfast, we will ride to the highest point of the trail, Tambrae point. The gentle gradient takes us 350m higher and gives amazing vistas over the Mackenzie basin. The expression goes ‘What goes up must come down’, but please be careful with your speed as you whizz down to Quailburn. Once we are there a quiet gravel road and cycle trail take us to Omarama.
We have a picnic lunch today.
Omarama Hot Tubs is the key to relaxing any sore muscles and is included in your tour price.
This evening we have an independent dinner.

Thu 24 FebOmarama – Kurow ( B,L,D) 67km

From Omarama, the scenery changes and brings to light how the region and its water catchment were used for the Waitaki Hydro-Electric Scheme.
Leaving Omarama we ride east down the Waitaki Valley, following the off-road trail to the top of the Chain Hills. From here we descend beside State Highway 83, then follow the edge of Lake Benmore to Pumpkin Point. We continue beside the lake to Sailors Cutting – a popular boating, fishing and camping destination.
We have a picnic lunch today.
The new section from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam is now open to the public which means that there is no longer a requirement to ride on SH83 over the Otematata Saddle from Sailors Cutting.
The scenery this new Trail opens up is amazing; if you are a little nervous of your riding ability or fitness, you can take it slowly and be prepared to walk any part you are not comfortable riding. Remember this is a fully supported tour and there will be a bike guide and our tour leader with the group the whole way.
From Benmore Dam we continue on our journey to Kurow by crossing over the dam and continuing on Te Akatarawa Road down the North side of Lake Aviemore to the Aviemore Dam.
After crossing the Aviemore Dam we are back on the off-road Trail which follows alongside State Highway 83 to Lake Waitaki and the Waitaki Dam, and then on to Kurow.
This evening we have some wine tasting at Ostler wines followed by dinner at Wild Sage Cafe.

Departing from Kurow toward Duntroon we get a few glances of the mighty Waitaki River. This part of the trail goes past the wetlands, an interesting community project that has rejuvenated the area.
We have a picnic lunch today.
We exit into the small settlement of Duntroon and head on to quiet roads and cycle trail, passing Elephant Rocks, film locations and through The Rakis Tunnel.
Our evening stop is at the historic Burnside Homestead tucked in an oasis of oak trees. This Homestead will amaze you when you enter the door and walk into the grand hall.
