The Sahara, Romans and St Augustine
Algeria is a hidden gem.
Africa’s largest country has ancient fortified towns, Roman ruins and Sahara sands.
On our tour we visit historic cities like Constantine (the city of bridges), Annaba (the city of Augustine) and the capital Algiers in the band of fertile land on Algeria’s Mediterranean coast.
We explore ancient Roman outposts like Djemila and Timgad (both UNESCO World Heritage sites), among the best preserved archaeological destinations in North Africa.
In the vast Sahara we stay in the beautiful town of Taghit, the small oasis town of Timimoun and Ghardaia, the ancestral home of the Mozabites.
Towards the end of the tour we travel into Tunisia. Here the highlight is a visit to the archaeological site of Carthage, founded by the Phoenicians.
