Naoshima & Shikoku in Japan

Naoshima & Shikoku in Japan

Japan’s Seto Inland Sea holds two of its most quietly captivating destinations: Naoshima, where contemporary art meets calm island landscapes, and Shikoku, a place of timeless temples, warm hospitality, and gentle rural beauty. Together they offer a journey that blends creativity, culture, and slow‑paced discovery — an invitation to experience Japan beyond the familiar.

Naoshima

This original Art island is something else… to restore its economy the whole island agreed to focus on all sorts of art forms – even the local bath house has to be seen to be believed.

Everywhere on the island are pieces of art which can be freely enjoyed – and whilst sometimes something seems to be lost in translation they are mostly colourful and whimsical.

The ChiChu Art Musuem is unique and houses only a few selected artists. The Claude Monet’s Water Lilies only lit by natural light are displayed in an extraordinary room.

The Benesse House Museum displays modern art; the building is a work of art in itself.

Also on the island is the Art House Project, which is a  small village where empty houses were given to artists to use as they wish.

Shikoku

Shikoku is not normally on the itinerary when tourists visit Japan. It does feel like you are stepping into a slower, quieter side of Japan.

Shikoku is best known for its 88 shrines and the pilgrimage walk between all of them. It would take over three months to complete the circuit so we have chosen a few of the sites which give us an opportunity to walk in the countryside.

The focus of this tour is on walking and whilst we may sight the temples we don’t intend to spend much time in their grounds or associated buildings.

The tracks we will be on require good walking shoes, walking poles and being able to ascend and descend on steps. My favourite parts are the trails through the forests and quiet areas. Of course we will stop regularly to take in the surroundings, have a drink and refuel.
