Aqua, clear green, crystal white are only some of the colours that feast the eyes at Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. The region’s unique limestone deposits change the water into jewel like clarity with multiple pools of different hues. I had heard how beautiful they were but words could not describe the dynamic and changeable scenery as we took the paths around waterfalls and numerous pools of flowing water.

The morning started with a heavy mist in the air. This cloud lay low and covered the tops of the autumn trees. As the sun rose in the sky, more of the auburn and rust leaves appeared and a greater number of the cascades and rushing streams surrounded us. I had expected waterfalls but not so many and as we moved from the lower lakes to the upper lakes the scenery gently changed. The ground rose and fell, the trees were larger and their foliage fell wider into the water or was reflected in stillness.

On the Balkans tour you have a day at the exquisite Plitvice Lakes and I would highly recommend completing the whole circuit of the lower and upper lakes. Both are beautiful but seeing them as an entirety definitely adds to the visual experience. The walk takes about 1.5 hours strolling along and there is even a ferry to reach the furthest area and a bus to catch to get back to the hotel.
